Tied in Knots
2017
Materials: 17 rolls of washi tape, skin cells
Finally, Tied in Knots, the washi tape piece for Stuck UP: 3rd Annual Pop-Up Installation is complete. Hopefully the next layer of skin cells on my fingers will start to heal before I have to take all the tape down again. Working on the ladder is always a little nerve-racking...until you forget and get comfortable...then reach a little too far and for a split second you lose your balance. Suddenly my gut does a back flip yelling at me to STOP WHAT YOU'RE DOING and regain my balance. Luckily, I kept telling myself, "no Kaitlin, that's a bad idea. Get down and adjust the ladder again. I know it doesn't look that far away but get down anyway."
Tied in Knots represents the feeling someone gets when they are scared. The tight clenching feeling in your gut as it does back flips. The knot itself is a figure 8 knot used in rock climbing, appropriate for a space up off the ground hanging over the gallery. I tried to add levels of gradients using various colors and intestinal designs within the knot itself.
